Frequently Asked Questions
The short answer: Positive-reinforcement dog training is a scientifically proven method to humanely teach your dog valuable skills and cues. Most importantly - and best of all - it is an incredibly efficient and effective way to build a loving and lifelong bond with your dog.
The long answer is something your certified dog trainer will be happy to discuss if you wish during or after class. It involves classical and operant conditioning, learning theory and the power of positive association (flashback to Ivan Pavlov and B.F. Skinner from 7th grade science class) to teach a desired behavior.
No, you don't have to use a clicker thing, but your dog will likely learn a bit quicker if you do. But if you're uncomfortable using a clicker, you can always use the "marker" word, "Yes." Either the clicker's "click" or the word "Yes" can be used to "mark" the precise moment your dog offers the desired behavior. While both the "click" and "Yes" will work with your dog, the "click" sound is just a bit more generic, distinct and effective. So, no, you don't have to use a clicker thing, but we sure hope you'll give it a try.
No.
Absolutely not.
In fact, among the many myths about positive-reinforcement training, the idea that you're bribing your dog to do the desired behavior is simply false. Not to get too complicated, but we use 4 primary methods of teaching the dog to offer the desired behavior on visual and verbal "Cue": Luring, Capturing, Shaping and Imitation.
For the purpose of answering this question, don't worry about shaping and imitation for now. Focusing primarily on luring, we initially use mini, smelly, tasty training treats to "lure" the dog to offer the desired behavior, for example, "Sit." After several successful attempts of luring, marking and rewarding the dog for sitting, we gradually diminish the use of, and need for, a training treat as a reward - quickly replacing it with kind praise.
Yes, that's a simplified answer to the process. But, no, you will not have to carry around treats for the rest of your life. So, no matter what you may hear about aversion training, or dominance theory, or alpha wolves, please know this - positive-reinforcement training is scientifically proven to help you and your fur kid communicate and build a lifelong bond.

No problem. We know life can get hectic. We'll try our best to find time to reschedule a make-up class. We'll also email you the study sheet from the class you missed so you can practice at home prior to the next class.
However, if you miss two or more consecutive weeks, it may be best if we reschedule you in an upcoming class that works better with your schedule. But no worries, we'll find a solution.
Two trainers per dog maximum. We limit it to 2 trainers due to the size of the training facility and for the sake of all the dogs in the class. Ideally, one person will train the dog while the other person observes. At least one trainer must be 21 or older. Children must be 11 or older and accompanied by a parent.

For the record, we love kids. In general, dogs really love kids. Due mainly to the size of the training facility and for the sake of all the dogs in training, we limit the number of trainers during class. However, we essentially train you to be a trainer for your entire family, especially children who aren't in class, when you return home and practice between classes. And we also provide ongoing support to help the training process in and out of classes.
Pretty simple.
- A simple band collar - Either a buckle or quick-release clasp.
- A light leash - Nothing too thick and heavy, especially for puppies and small dogs.
- Food rewards - Ideally your dog's own dry food, especially for puppies so we don't create upset stomachs or diarrhea. Mini, smelly, tasty training treats such as Zuke's, Pet Botanics and Crazy Dog treats available at most pet stores also often work well.
- Training bag - Yes, a sandwich baggie full of kibble or treats will work. However, you will have your hands full with a leash, clicker and treat bag. Since rewarding your dog quickly with a treat is key to the training process, a basic training bag worn around your waist will be very helpful.
- Small toy - Ideally a small stuffed toy. Please no squeakers or noise makers. A toy can help calm nervous pups and refocus barking dogs.
- Training clicker - Unless you choose to use the marker word, "Yes."
- Shoes and clothes you can move in - Come ready to have fun and move around, especially during sessions when we're learning recall (aka "come"), go to place, leave it, and loose leash walking.
Happy Tailz practices positive-reinforcement dog training techniques. Please do not bring any aversion training equipment including:
- Slip Chain collars
- Prong collars
- E-collars
Also, for training purposes, please do not bring any harnesses or halters.
We're confident you'll find our positive-reinforcement techniques will be all that's needed to achieve the desired results and build a lifelong bond between you and your fur kid.
We'll call you. Just a quick introduction from our trainer, review of vaccination requirements, suggested gear for class, and two important questions:
1.) Has your dog ever shown any aggression towards other people?
2.) Has your dog ever shown any aggression towards other dogs
If the answer is yes to either question, not to worry, we can still help. Maybe a private class would be best. Maybe the dog has a medical issue that a visit to the vet could solve. If our trainer feels the dog would not benefit from training at this time, we will provide a full refund and a referral to a local animal behaviorist more qualified to offer assistance. But rest assured, we'll do all that we're qualified to do to help you and your fur kid.
Not a problem at all. You can request a full refund at any time prior to your 3rd scheduled training session. If you have questions or concerns about any issue during training, please do not hesitate to speak with our trainer. We will do our very best to solve any problems and make your training experience as positive and productive as possible. You and your dog's happiness is always our primary concern.
